CruisePro is a tally book for timber cruising. It walks you to the plot, takes a tree in a few taps and works out volume and sampling error on the phone, with or without a signal.

This one works. Set the tree, press Add tree.

One plot,
four steps

The same loop, twenty to forty times a day.

  1. Walk to the plot

A compass card and the feet left to go. At the stake, the centre is averaged from 60 GPS fixes.

  2. Tally the trees

Species, DBH, logs and product on big keys. Each tree shows its volume before you add it.

  3. Finish the plot

Trees, basal area and board feet per acre, with slope and aspect. Then the next plot.

  4. Read the stand

How many more plots the error target needs, at 95%. The report is a PDF.

FAQ

The same answers are in the app, under Settings.

What is CruisePro?

An offline-first timber cruising app. It keeps tract, stand, plot and tree records, walks you to each plot with GPS, and turns the tally into per-acre figures, statistics and a report.

Does it work without a signal?

Yes. The tally, volumes and statistics are worked out on the phone. Maps need an MBTiles file imported to show without a connection.

Do I need to allow location?

Location is needed to walk to a plot and to save its centre. It is used only while CruisePro is open. The rest of the app works without it.

Where is my data stored?

On your phone. Deleting the app deletes the cruise with it, so make a backup first.

What is in a backup?

Tracts, stands, plots and trees. Offline map tiles are not in the file. Restoring asks whether to add the backup to what is here or to replace everything. Replacing needs the app closed and reopened to finish.

Why do plot boxes show on the home page only sometimes?

They show when a stand still has a plot to finish. The newest tract is checked first, and the first stand with an unfinished plot is the one shown. With no plots yet, or with every plot finished, there is nothing to pick up, so only the tract list shows.

What do the marks on a plot box mean?

Filled with a check: finished. Empty: finished with no trees. Open: has trees but was not finished. Next, with a double ring: the lowest-numbered plot still to do. To do: not started.

When does a plot count as finished?

When you finish it from the plot summary. Leaving the tally keeps the plot open, even with trees in it. Only finished plots are samples, so open plots stay out of the statistics.

Why is there no sampling error yet?

The error and CV need 5 finished plots in a stand. Before that the numbers mean nothing, so they are not shown.

How do I get the cruise out of the app?

The cruise report is a PDF with the tract summary, stand breakdown, volume by species and statistics. Save it to Files or email it. FVS export needs Professional.

What do the default log rule and BAF change?

Only new tracts and stands. The ones already written keep what they have.

Which GPS accuracy mode should I use?

Balanced suits most days. High Precision gives the best fix and uses more battery. Battery Saver lasts longer with a rougher fix.

If it goes
wrong

  • GPS accuracy looks poor

Wait a few minutes in the open, turn on Precise Location and turn off Low Power Mode.

  • Location is not updating

Check iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → CruisePro.

  • Missing data or odd results

Close and reopen the app. If it is still wrong, email the steps to reproduce it, screenshots if you can, and your device and iOS version.
