FAQ

What is Cat Guard?

Cat Guard is a macOS menu bar app that runs work and break intervals (like Pomodoro). When a work session ends, it shows a transparent, screen-covering overlay with a cat animation so you pause and step away — then it returns you to focus when the break is over.

Does it behave like a normal Mac app?

You control it from the menu bar. It is designed not to clutter the Dock with everyday use; settings and timers live in the popover (or sheet) you open from the icon.

Can I choose the cat video?

Yes. Built-in looping clips ship with the app; open the Media section in preferences and tap a thumbnail to choose which transparent video the overlay plays.

Where is my data stored?

Work length, break length, selected media, and preferences are stored locally on your Mac (User Defaults). Nothing is synced to our servers — the app does not use a backend or accounts.

How do I stop the overlay?

Breaks follow the timer. If emergency exit is enabled in settings, press ⌥ Option + K while the overlay is key to dismiss it early.

Troubleshooting

  • Overlay missing on an external monitor? Connect or rearrange displays before starting a session where possible; if screen layout changed mid-run, quit and reopen the app from the menu bar so overlays are recreated.
  • Video missing or blank overlay? Confirm a Media item is selected in settings and that the bundled .mov files are present. Reinstall or replace the Media resources if files were deleted.
  • Timer does not advance? Check that Cat Guard is running (menu bar icon). macOS sleep or closing the lid pauses foreground activity.
  • I need to unblock the screen urgently? Use the app's emergency exit (if enabled) or force quit via Activity Monitor only as a last resort—your in-progress timer state may reset.
  • Bug reports: Email us with steps to reproduce, macOS version, and whether you use multiple monitors.
